Social Media Mastery

A practical guide to help community groups and small organisations build an engaged online community, share their work more confidently and make social media easier to manage.

What is this toolkit about?

Social media does not have to be about perfect posts or going viral. This toolkit focuses on showing the human side of your work, connecting with your local community and helping people understand how to get involved.

What you will learn

The guide breaks social media into four practical areas, making it easier to choose where to focus, what to post and how to keep things consistent.

1

Choose the right platforms

Focus your energy where your community already spends time, instead of trying to be everywhere at once.

2

Create content that works

Use simple content themes, strong captions, useful post formats and a balanced content mix.

3

Build genuine engagement

Turn followers into active community members through conversations, questions and real stories.

4

Plan and schedule effectively

Make social media manageable with a content calendar, batch creation and free scheduling tools.

Start with the right platform

The toolkit recommends choosing one or two platforms based on your audience, capacity and content style.

Facebook

Best for local community groups, event promotion, detailed updates and older demographics.

Instagram

Best for visual storytelling, behind the scenes content, event highlights and volunteer spotlights.

WhatsApp groups

Best for direct communication, quick updates, event coordination and active member groups.

LinkedIn

Best for professional networking, local business connections, partnership updates and impact reports.

TikTok

Best for younger audiences, quick educational videos, repair processes and before and after content.

Capacity matters

The guide encourages groups to be honest about time, skills and resources before choosing where to post.

Create content without overthinking it

The toolkit suggests using the 70, 20, 10 guideline. Around 70% of posts can show your activities and community, 20% can offer educational tips and 10% can be promotional. This keeps your content useful, human and balanced.

Practical content ideas

Use recurring themes and proven post formats so you do not have to start from scratch every time.

Before and after posts

Show items that were repaired, reused or saved from waste. These posts make your impact easy to understand.

Member stories

Share volunteer stories, skills learned and community achievements to show the people behind your work.

Behind the scenes

Show setup, preparation, sorting, making, fixing, organising and the everyday work that happens behind the final result.

Community impact

Share numbers such as items repaired, money saved, people involved or resources kept in use.

Question posts

Ask simple questions that people can easily answer. This helps start conversations and boost engagement.

Seasonal content

Link your activities to seasons, events, holidays or awareness days to keep content timely and relevant.

Build genuine engagement

Good social media is not only about posting. It is also about listening, replying and making people feel welcome.

Focus on conversations

  • Respond to comments and messages.
  • Ask genuine questions.
  • Use names where appropriate.
  • Support other local groups.

Turn followers into participants

  • Include clear next steps.
  • Show real people at real events.
  • Make joining feel easy.
  • Address common concerns.

Create a community feel

  • Celebrate milestones.
  • Share member stories.
  • Use shared hashtags.
  • Repost user content with credit.
