Reimagining your digital life

The world produces 62 million tonnes of electronic wastes a year – many devices that are replaced are still perfectly functional. But it doesn't have to be this way. Smartphones should last longer than your two-year upgrade package, laptops should be supported better with long-lasting software, and tablets should be easily sharable between family members.

A total of 14 million tonnes of electronic waste are improperly thrown out with regular rubbish every year, equating to the weight of around 24,000 of the world’s heaviest passenger planes.

Ireland's tech scene is shifting toward devices with longevity, repairability and real value. From repair cafes to refurbished specialists, from device sharing to upgrade timing, brilliant alternatives are already thriving across the country. Here's your guide to staying digital without breaking the bank or filling the drawer of forgotten cables.

Did you know...

  • Waste electrical and electronic equipment, also known as e-waste, has quickly become one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally.

  • Just 1% of critical raw material requirements is met by current e-waste recycling. The Critical Raw Materials Act for EU member states has a 25% target for this.

  • When properly handled, e-waste could reduce CO2 emissions by 93 million tonnes annually, equivalent to taking 20 million cars off the road.

A guide to buying better technology

Look for longer warranties, replaceable parts (batteries, screens), standard connections (USB-C over proprietary) and software update commitments. And remember the sums. A €600 phone that lasts five years costs €120 annually, not including network costs. €300 phone lasting two years costs €150 annually, not including network costs.
